Korea’s First Pancreatic Islet Cell Transplantation

November. 1999

Dr. Duck-Jong Han of the Division of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery and his team succeeded in Korea’s first transplantation of pancreatic islet cells in a patient with a complex deformity of blood vessels of the pancreas. This opened a new door for the treatment of type I diabetes in patients who are born without pancreatic islet cells and who pancreas can therefore not produce insulin.

Asia’s First Simultaneous Transplantations of Liver-Kidney

March. 1999

The Organ Transplantation Team of (Dr. Seung-Kyu Lee(Sung-Gyu Lee) and Dr. Duck-Jong Han, succeeded in Asia’s first transplantation where a patient with liver cancer and late-stage renal failure received both a liver and a kidney from a brain-dead donor. This set the stage for a new phase in Korea’s medical community.
