Successful half-matched bone marrow transplantation performed for severe aplastic anemia

The team of Drs. Jong-Jin Seo, Ho-Joon Im, and Kyung-Nam Koh, of the Children's Hospital Division of Pediatric Hematology & Oncology, released clinical results in the globally prominent British Journal of Hematology regarding successful half-matched bone marrow transplantation for severe aplastic anemia (SAA). SAA is a disease that requires lifelong blood transfusions, forcing patients without matching donors to undergo the pain and difficulty of ongoing blood transfusions and associated complications. Haploidentical bone marrow transplantation is a method that uses hematopoietic stem cells of a half-matched genotype between parent and child or between siblings, after selectively removing the cells that can cause an adverse immunological reaction . The results achieved in this research include rapid T-cell reconstitution after haploidentical bone marrow transplantation, very low risk of graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD), and feasibility of immediate secondary transplantations even in cases involving graft failure.
