This is Dr. Ki- Up Lee, Director of the Biomedical Research Center.

The Biomedical Research Center was established in 1990 when the Asan Medical Center opened in Seoul. Its goal is to make a contribution to human health and welfare by discovering solutions and cures to various diseases based on the studies and research on life phenomena. Since its establishment, the Institute has made great achievements in basic research, generation mechanism of illnesses, dynamics, diagnosis and treatment research, and has played a leading role in education of researchers, academic exchange with other research institutes and human exchanges. Life science is rapidly developing beyond disciplinary barriers in line with the development of the disciplines such as information science, nano-science and material science. In particular, creative research ideas or methods allow for developing unprecedented or innovative diagnosis and treatments in the studies aiming at overcoming diseases. However, a well-structured, comprehensive research system, which would effectively lead one step to another, is essential to translate creative, basic research findings to intermediary and clinical research. In this respect, the Asan Institute for Life Sciences, an arm of the best hospital, Asan Medical Center, is ideally positioned to carry out disease-related research in all steps from basic life science to clinical medicine effectively and consistently. The Asan Institute for Life Sciences will be fully committed to developing the Asan Medical Complex into the leading life science institution in the world by establishing the harmonized basic and clinical research system with experienced faculty and researchers backed by a wealth of clinical resources of the Asan Medical Center which any nation or any research institute cannot afford.
