Asan foundation scholarship students visit rural area for volunteer services

This summer, a group of Asan scholarship students from the JungDam Association held a gathering to perform
volunteer services in a rural area from July 18-22. The group of 50 current scholarship students and 20 alumni
visited the village of Gaeun-ri, located in Gangwon Province셲 Hongcheon County. The volunteers took part in a
variety of activities, including picking ginseng seeds, doing environmental cleanup and weeding, providing hair
and beauty services, taking portrait photos, and hosting a banquet for local seniors. This rural volunteer service
was arranged to instill the scholarship students with the Asan Spirit of sharing and to build solidarity. Student group
president, Sang-Yoon Lee (age 23, a junior at Hallym University), remarked, 쏮ost of the residents are older
adults in their sixties. When they are swamped with work, it셲 a nice feeling to kind of give them some help.
The JungDam Association has carried out rural volunteer services every summer since 1977. Currently,
about 700 members of the group, officially founded in 1979, are involved in charitable missions. The JungDam
Association also holds such events as academic conferences and retreats.
