AMC Stroke Center is

Best Practice in Medicine

Run by a team of top-class physicians and surgeons specializing in neurology, neurosurgery, radiology, vascular surgery, and rehabilitation medicine. The Center provides comprehensive treatment for stroke, with a systematic approach and cross-disciplinary teamwork.

Timely Patient Care for Acute Stroke Patients

AMC has a dedicated inpatient unit for stroke patients, a stroke intensive care unit, and a critical care unit. This is a part of AMC's famous one-stop patient care, providing timely and effective treatment from ER to inpatient units.

Continuous Patient Care Plan

We provide various care programs for our patients after they are discharged and return home. Clinician nurse specialists with extensive experience provide consultations regarding home treatment, diet management, and rehabilitation. We also have visiting nurses available for patients needing at-home treatment procedures.

Focus on Continuous Improvement

Our experience of 20 years and our achievements in research are already at a world class level. However, we will not be satisfied until we are the very best - we will never stop the research and development of new and improved methods of diagnosis and treatment for stroke.

Treatments & Service

Emergency Care

Operated on a 24-hour basis, with a stroke specialist team of neurologist, emergency medicine specialist, and stroke specialist on duty to provide timely and effective treatment around the clock. We also have an ER section dedicated to stroke patients, so they can receive life-saving procedures immediately upon arrival no matter how crowded the ER is.

Stroke Intensive Care Unit

Located within AMC Stroke Center, the stroke treatment unit has a state-of-the-art facility based on a 24-hour monitoring system of blood pressure, oxygen level, and EMG. A neurologist and nurse specialists provide intensive care for patients in the unit.

Critical Care Unit

Critical Care Unit provides intensive monitoring and treatment for stroke patients in critical conditions, including patients suffering from thrombosis or hemorrhage in the brain and needing emergency surgeries, patients with respiratory failure, and patients who received radiation intervention procedures and surgeries.

Diagnostic Radiology

AMC Stroke Center has state-of-the-art MRI (diffusion, perfusion magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic resonance angiography) and CT (CT perfusion imaging, CT angiography) equipments. These equipments are run on a 24-hour basis for accurate diagnosis and optimum treatment for stroke. The Center also has all equipments necessary for diagnostic tests including echocardiography, carotid ultrasound, arteriography, and nuclear medicine tests for cerebral arteries.

Medication and Interventional Radiology Procedures

Treatments with medication includes emergency injection of clot-busting drugs on the veins (within 3 hours) and on the arteries (within 6 hours) to open up obstructed arteries. Using interventional radiology procedures, balloon insertion or stenting can be performed to dilate more severely obstructed arteries. Coil embolization is a procedure used to treat aneurysms presenting a risk of hemorrhage. AMC Stroke team has extensive experience in stroke treatments, performing 264 medication treatments and 446 angioplasties.

Surgical Procedures

Surgical treatments for stroke include: carotid endarterectomy to open up the blocked artery, angioplasty to connect arteries to improve circulation, surgery to reduce intracranial pressure for severe edema resulting from a stroke, surgical removal of AVM (arteriovenous malformation), and aneurysm clipping. In the past 10 years, AMC Stroke Center performed 650 carotid endarterectomies, 3,000 aneurysm clippings, and 100 angioplasties.

Rehabilitation

We provide rehabilitation programs for stroke patients at an appropriate timing. Our rehabilitation programs are customized to each patient, including walking exercise, daily movement exercise, cognitive rehabilitation, speech therapy, and swallowing exercise. The rehabilitation programs are combined with necessary social and occupational rehabilitation routines, to help patients resume daily activities more independently.
