Introduction to the Division of Neonatology

Neonatology, which has developed rapidly over the past 50 years, is a field that has shown more remarkable improvements in survival rates and treatment outcomes than any other branch of medicine. The survival rate of very low birth weight infants (weighing less than 1,500 grams at birth) at the Division of Neonatology from Asan Medical Center, which boasts the highest treatment outcomes in Korea, has been 90-95% in recent years, matching the results of leading institutions worldwide.

Established in 1996 as the first independent specialized division in Korea, the Division of Neonatology has undergone expansions in 2013 and 2023, and now operates three Neonatal ICU with a total of 62 beds, featuring one of the best facilities in Korea. Asan Medical Center has a 24-hour specialist on-duty system in neonatology, pediatric cardiology, and pediatric surgery.

Premature baby and high-risk newborns, either born from high-risk pregnant women or transferred from hospitals across the country, receive prompt and precise treatment through an organic collaboration system with obstetrics department, which features a top-notch fetal treatment center, and other relevant clinical departments. Even after discharge, we remain committed to helping babies grow and develop healthily through our premature infant clinic and various collaborative outpatient services with specialized departments.

Fetal Treatment

One of the best services of the Center is a collaborative system of relevant departments of pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, pediatric surgery, pediatric thoracic & cardiovascular surgery, pediatric urology, pediatric neurology, and pediatric plastic surgery. It aims to check and diagnose fetal deformities by an ultrasound screening at the same time providing consultation for parents on the postnatal treatment and its outcomes and facilitates the treatment of a baby immediately after birth.
