Education & Research

Our department actively trains medical students, residents, and international fellows. We publish extensively in high-impact journals and present our findings at international conferences. Research and innovation remain at the core of our clinical practice.

High‑volume clinical excellence & surgical innovation in microsurgery

  • Our department continues to lead high-volume microsurgical practice, performing over 4,500 cases annually and contributing approximately 30 SCI-indexed publications each year.
  • A recent fellowship experience report (May 2025) highlights visiting surgeons observing advanced lymphovenous anastomosis techniques, including side‑to‑end reconnections for four‑limb congenital lymphedema, demonstrating precision in confined surgical spaces.

Education and research integration

  • International observerships and fellowships supported by structured educational programs and daily academic activities.
  • The department is organized into specialized units: Extremity & Lymphedema, Craniofacial, and Breast Reconstruction.

Medical Specialities

Take a look at the treatment of major diseases in your department.

Breast & Trunk Surgery

we understand that breast cancer treatment is not only about survival but also about restoring body, identity, and confidence. Our Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery team offers state-of-the-art breast reconstruction tailored to each patient’s medical needs and personal preferences.

Cleft Lip and Palate Surgery

Asan Medical Center has performed over 7,000 cleft lip and palate surgeries since initiating the program in 1989, with recent years averaging over 300 cases annually. The surgical goals are to restore normal appearance and function by aligning the muscles and tissues to support optimal feeding, speech, and facial growth.

Facial Contouring and Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic (jaw) and facial contouring surgery extend beyond aesthetics, playing a vital role in correcting functional issues such as bite misalignment, jaw asymmetry, and airway problems. Advances like cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and 3D planning software enable precise preoperative visualization...

Ear Reconstruction (Microtia)

Microtia repair has advanced and now offers single-stage or multi-stage approaches tailored to patient’s needs. The gold standard is autologous reconstruction, in which a new ear is sculped from the patient’s own rib cartilage and precisely implanted beneath a thin skin flap behind the ear to achieve the most natural appearance and feel.

Facial Palsy Surgery (Facial Reanimation)

Facial palsy or paralysis can dramatically impact expression, speech, and daily living. Modern facial reanimation programs provide a full spectrum of care, beginning with early assessment to prevent irreversible muscle atrophy.

Lymphatic Surgery

Lymphedema is a chronic and progressive condition caused by impaired lymphatic drainage, leading to fluid accumulation, swelling, skin thickening, and increased susceptibility to infection and fibrosis.

Microsurgery

At Asan Medical Center, we specialize in supermicrosurgical reconstruction to preserve limbs and restore both form and function following oncologic resections, traumatic injuries, and diabetic foot complications.

Upper & Lower Extremity Reconstruction

Neuromas and phantom limb pain are debilitating complications that can arise from nerve injury or limb amputation.
