The Division of Rheumatology is a subspecialty of the Department of Internal Medicine that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory joint disorders. Rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis often involve systemic symptoms and complex pathophysiology, requiring specialized knowledge and a meticulous approach to care.
The term ‘rheumatology’ originates from the ancient Greek word rheuma, which means “a flowing noxious humor.” This reflects the concept in ancient medicine that pain was caused by pathological substances flowing through the body. It also corresponds to the nature of diseases treated in the Division of Rheumatology, which involve chronic immune-mediated pathology affecting the joints, muscles, and soft tissues.
The Division of Rheumatology provides care for a wide range of rheumatic diseases, including the following:
These diseases can affect multiple organs beyond simple joint pain, including the skin, kidneys, lungs, and nervous system. Early diagnosis and an integrated treatment approach through multidisciplinary care are essential. In particular, recent advances such as the introduction of biological agents have significantly improved treatment outcomes, providing tangible benefits in slowing disease progression and enhancing patients’ quality of life.
Our Division of Rheumatology operates multidisciplinary clinics for major diseases such as Takayasu’s arteritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and inflammatory myopathies, taking into account the characteristics of these systemic conditions. By working closely with specialists from related fields, we provide personalized, optimized treatment tailored to each individual patient. Additionally, through continuous research and education, we are leading efforts to develop new treatments for rheumatic diseases.
