Why should you receive treatment
at the AMC Heart Institute?

AMC Heart Institute has been a pioneer in heart disease treatment and research since its opening in 1989. As an internationally-recognized medical center, the institute attributes its world-class medical services and research qualifications to its efforts in creating a patient-centered system.

The Heart Institute has three main centers that are disease-specific including the departments of cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, and vascular surgery. In these centers, the institute provides specialized and differentiated medical services through a multidisciplinary approach.

The Heart Institute takes a leading role in the fields of heart disease treatment and research both at home and abroad. The Institute performs the latest surgical techniques such as hybrid operations, stent-graft applications, and minimally invasive da Vinci robot-assisted surgery. AMC Heart Institute is distinguished as a global leader in the field of left main coronary artery(LMCA) stenting.

Heart Institute Specialized Centers

  • Cardiac Imaging Center
  • Aortic Disease Center
  • Ischemic Heart Disease Center
  • Atrial Fibrillation Center
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease Center
  • Valvular Heart Disease Center

Major procedures and surgeries

Left Main Coronary Artery(LMCA) Stenting and Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)

AMC Heart Institute has the leading-edge treatment for left main coronary artery (LMCA) disease. LMCA disease is the most severe and complex form of coronary artery disease with a high complication rate. AMC Heart Institute is the first to begin intervention for LMCA disease and developed many special techniques for LMCA stenting. The results of the MAIN-COMPARE and PRECOMBAT study published in the New England Journal of Medicine - the most prestigious medical journal in the world - changed the paradigm of the treatment of LMCA disease from surgery to stenting.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery reduces the length of hospital stay and minimizes scarring, offering cosmetic effect. It allows patients to return to their daily lives quickly. Partial incision surgery (ex. Upper sternotomy, Lower sternotomy) and da Vinci robot-assisted surgery can be used for coronary artery bypass graft, valve surgery, and congenital heart disease surgeries.

TAVR (Transcatheter aortic valve replacement)

Since TAVI was first introduced in Korea in 2010, the Heart Institute has performed more than 1,600 procedures,  the largest number in Asia. The number of TAVI cases is marking a sharp increase each year. We conduct this procedure in the hybrid operating room where both heart procedures and surgeries can be performed simultaneously.

AMC’s treatment performance

  • Korea’s first success for PMV(percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty,1989)
  • Korea’s first success for coronary artery stenting (1991)
  • Korea’s first and largest number of heart transplantation cases (1992)
  • Korea’s first success of implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (1996)
  • World’s first success of left main coronary artery stenting (1998)
  • Korea’s first success of TAVI(transcatheter aortic valve implantation) (2010)
  • Korea’s largest number of da Vinci Robot surgery cases
  • Korea’s first success of TEER(transcatheter edge to edge repair) with MitraClip (2020)
  • Asia’s largest number (as a single hospital) of TAVI
