The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism specializes in treating disorders related to endocrine organs such as
pituitary glands, thyroid glands, pancreas, and adrenal glands as well as endocrine actions that stimulate a particular organ or induce changes as hormones and biological substances are secreted into blood vessels.
The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism has led the treatment of patients with endocrine and metabolic disorders in Korea since its opening in 1989 when AMC was established. In terms of treatment, we run specialized clinics for diagnosis and treatment of patients with chronic adult diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and arteriosclerosis; for diagnosis and postoperative management of patients with thyroid dysfunction, thyroid nodule, and thyroid cancer; for diagnosis of osteoporotic patients and fracture prevention and treatment; and for rare endocrine and metabolic disorders. Moreover, we operate a diabetes screening room and diabetes lessons for patients’ lifestyle management to make sure that patients obtain a favorable outcome. We also concentrate on preventing recurrence of thyroid cancer and treating metastatic diseases by expanding two radioisotope therapy rooms to four in 2005.
As our professors began joining the Diabetes Center to allow diabetes patients to get more systematic and comfortable treatment in 2007, the Center became a specialized diabetes center finally in 2009 that collaborates with diabetes-related departments such as endocrinology and metabolism, ophthalmology, cardiology, and nephrology as well as the Foot Clinic.
In terms of research, we have secured researchers and facilities specialized in diabetes, obesity, arteriosclerosis, osteoporosis, and thyroid cancer. Research in the field of endocrinology and metabolism are published in SCI-level scientific foreign and domestic journals. We are implementing cutting-edge research based on the Asan Institute for Life Sciences contributing to the treatment of incurable adult diseases.
In terms of education, we are making an endeavor to train resident physicians and clinical fellows with the aim of cultivating great specialists in endocrinology and metabolism. Every morning a conference is held for discussion and journal review on patient treatment through voluntary participation of resident physicians. We also provide education and research programs following courses offered by the graduate department of medicine of the University of Ulsan, and conduct a wide range of lectures and clinical practice of its medical students.
In this way, we are making constant efforts to provide quality medical services in terms of treatment, research, and education. Every member of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism will not rest but continue to work hard for a better tomorrow.

Brain Tumor
The center provides customized treatment to each patient, including all aspects of brain tumor treatment such as skull base surgery, endoscopic operation, neuro-oncology and clinical trials, stereotactic radiosurgery, and neuroendocrinology.
The AMC Peripheral Vascular Disease Center provides total care services from diagnosis, drug therapy, procedure, and surgery to rehabilitation for carotid artery and peripheral vascular diseases.
The Pituitary Clinic at Asan Medical Center offers fast-track services for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with pituitary disorders. Specialists in endocrinology and metabolism, neurosurgery, and radiation oncology collaborate in sharing opinions to accurately and rapidly decide on optimal therapy and to treat the patients accordingly.
