The Department of Neurosurgery in Children’s Hospital treats diseases that occur in the brain and spine.

Neurosurgical diseases in children are different from those in adults, so specific experience in treating children with neurosurgical disorders is very important. AMC has a treatment team capable of producing the best outcome based on their ample experience in the treatment of neurosurgical disorders in sick children.

The team has introduced Gamma Knife radiosurgery, a first in Korea, to have successfully treated brain tumors and cerebrovascular malformations without surgical intervention.
For integrated treatment of brain tumors in children, a first in Korea, AMC has formed a brain tumor treatment team along with the blood tumor, radiation oncology, and pathology divisions for children since 1998; launched a multidisciplinary treatment for brain tumors on children; achieving great results and being selected as the best brain tumor children treatment team by the Dong-A Daily News.

A special clinic for craniofacial malformation in collaboration with the departments of plastic surgery, dentistry, and genetics was opened to perform the state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgery using a model surgery and a retractor along with an advanced non-operative helmet treatment equipped with a 3D CT scanner, generating highly satisfactory results.

Moyamoya disease is a disease where certain arteries in the brain are constricted. The team did comprehensive MRI scanning of cerebrovascular images and the cutting-edge cerebral blood flow (CBF) tester in cooperation with the departments of neuroradiology and neurology in the children’s hospital to carry out a noninvasive diagnosis, and developed a creative surgical technique to successfully treat it without complications.
Brain endoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that can overcome the disadvantages of the existing open craniotomy. The team has a lot of experience in treating hydrocephalus, subarachnoid cysts, brain tumors, etc. using this new method.
The team has sufficient experience in performing a selective posterior rhizotomy which is a surgical intervention of spastic cerebral palsy, and recently introduced a new baclofen pump therapy.

The Department of Neurology in the Children’s Hospital covers the following major areas:

  • Brain tumor, spinal cord tumor
  • Moyamoya disease, brain arteriovenous malformation
  • Craniofacial malformation (skull deformity, postural plagiocephaly)
  • Hydrocephalus, subarachnoid cyst, spinal cord lipoma, spinal malformation, chiari malformation
  • Spastic cerebral palsy
